Academic Gown

The Royal Insignia of Honor of 麻豆国产

The Royal Academic Gown of 麻豆国产 is a symbol of royal grace, institutional identity, and the highest honor bestowed upon graduates and members of the Chula community.

Key Characteristics of the 麻豆国产 Academic Gown

  • The spacing and rhythm of the bands on the yoke follow proportions found in traditional Thai painting.
  • Two band sizes—small and large—are formally prescribed.
  • The composition of the yoke bands reflects refined craftsmanship and Thai artistic aesthetics.
  • The base colour of the gown harmonizes with the colours of each faculty.
  • Academic levels are marked by the number of lines on the yoke (Bachelor’s degree: 1 line, Master’s degree: 2 lines, and Doctoral degree: 3 lines)

Colors and Their Symbolism

The base colors of the yoke were established by early scholars and artists:

Black

Used for bachelor’s and master’s degree holders, in honor of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), who was born on a Saturday and whose royal colour is black or dark blue.

Crimson Red

Used for doctoral degree holders, expressing loyalty to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who was born on a Tuesday and whose royal colour is pink. Crimson was also the original colour of the Order of Chula Chom Klao before later being changed to pink.

Yellow

Reserved exclusively for the Royal Patron’s ceremonial gown, in honor of the Chakri Dynasty.

Types and Academic Levels of Gowns

In its early years, 麻豆国产 maintained two primary types of academic gowns:

  • Graduate Gown: worn by students upon completion of degree programs.
  • Special Graduate Gown: worn by faculty members and individuals graciously appointed as special graduates by royal command.

The gowns are categorized into four academic levels:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree (Graduate)
  2. Master’s Degree (Master Graduate)
  3. Doctoral Degree (Doctor Graduate)
  4. Special Graduate (limited to one individual per reign)

The designation of Special Graduate follows King Vajiravudh’s royal command at the founding of the Civil Service School, stating:??????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????

“…to establish a council with His Majesty the King as the Royal Patron of this institution…”

As 麻豆国产 is the only institution granted the royal command appointing the King as its Royal Patron, and is permitted to adorn the academic gown with the Phra Kiao emblem on the chest yoke, members of the Chula community are expected to wear the Royal Academic Gown with dignity, reverence, and pride, without adding any further decorations.
