Among the many existing herbs, there are two types that, when ingested by pets such as cats, can affect their behavior. These are “catnip,” which cat lovers are familiar with or may have used before, and another herb called “Acalypha indica,” which has similar properties to catnip in that it can stimulate cats to feel “high” and relieve stress. Although these two herbs share similar properties, they have several significant differences. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uttra Jamikorn, Department of Animal Science, , 麻豆国产, has provided some useful information about “catnip” and “Acalypha indica” so that they can be used appropriately and safely for pets.  

“颁补迟苍颈辫,” known scientifically as Nepeta cataria, is a plant in the mint family called Catmint and is not related to cannabis at all. “Acalypha indica”, on the other hand, is a plant with the scientific name Acalypha indica L., classified in the Euphorbiaceae family. It is found in tropical regions and is widely distributed in many countries, including Thailand.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uttra explained that both catnip and acalypha indica have scents that attract cats, which are from the iridoid group of compounds, called “nepetalactone.” When cats smell this compound, they will lick and rub themselves against the plants. Acalypha indica releases the scent from the roots, but some cats also like to eat or play with the leaves. The scent of catnip is in the leaves, which is often extracted into oils or added to cat toys. The “nepetalactone” compound is particularly effective on felines as it mimics pheromones, which are the unique scents produced by cats. This makes cats feel invigorated and euphoric when they smell or ingest it. However, this compound is safe for cats as its effects only last around 10-15 minutes. 

Q: Are catnip and acalypha indica addictive? 

Although they make cats feel euphorically “high”, they are not addictive as many people understand. They are simply compounds that affect the nervous system, causing temporary happiness, and are not harmful to cats. 

Q: Do all cats react the same way to catnip and acalypha indica? 

Not necessarily. Each cat may react differently. Some may really enjoy it; some may not be interested at all; and some may even be allergic. You should observe your cat’s reaction when exposing them to catnip or acalypha indica. 

Q: Is it harmful if catnip or acalypha indica is used too frequently??  

If used in appropriate amounts, it is not harmful. However, you should not use it too frequently, as it might cause addiction and disinterest in other things for your cat. Using it occasionally should be sufficient. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uttra emphasized that although catnip and acalypha indica have similar effects on cats, they are different types of plants. The compound in both plants is highly safe for cats; however, as the owner, you should monitor your cat closely for any allergies or unusual reactions when exposed to it. Understanding the differences and the appropriate use of the plants will help your cat live a happy and healthy life.
