The forum invited the public to look beyond daily headlines and examine the power structures underlying major news events in Thai society. It was open to the general public, students, academics, journalists, and anyone interested in media and communication issues. 

The event formed part of?the?ICA Regional Hub Thailand 2026, an international academic conference held alongside the . The conference was organized under the theme “Bridging Divides, Amplifying Voices: Communication and Inequalities from a Southeast Asian Perspective,” which explores the role of communication in addressing contemporary social inequalities.?

Using several high-profile news stories as case studies, the discussion examined how these events reflect deeper structural inequalities in areas such as communication power, digital platform governance, the construction of truth, access to justice, and the future of Thailand’s media industry. 

Topics analyzed included the prolonged livestreaming of inappropriate content on Facebook that remained active for hours without being removed, barriers to justice faced by survivors of sexual violence, debates surrounding public opinion polls and data that shape public perceptions, and delays in defining the future direction of Thailand’s digital television industry amid increasing competition from global platforms.

Speakers emphasized that these incidents should not be viewed merely as isolated news stories. Rather, they represent ongoing struggles for power among media users, journalists, global digital platforms, businesses, and the Thai state in an era when algorithms and artificial intelligence increasingly determine what information society sees and engages with. 

The forum encouraged participants to examine key forms of inequality shaping the future of Thailand’s media ecosystem, including: 

  • Platform Inequality – power imbalances between global digital platforms and users. 
  • Epistemic Inequality – unequal power in defining truth and determining the credibility of information. 
  • Economic and Infrastructure Inequality—structural disparities in economic resources and digital infrastructure.

Speakers also exchanged perspectives on emerging scenarios for Thailand’s media ecosystem and proposed ways to design a media system that is more equitable, transparent, and inclusive of citizens’ voices amid the rapid advancement of AI technologies and the growing influence of Big Tech.
